Can a catcher during a play use his face mask to stop a ball?

we had a runner go home from second base on a hit, the right fielder throws the ball strait to the catcher but, the ball takes a bad hop that makes the catcher turn the opposite way of hi glove and now decides to use the face mask that he is holding on the other hand to stop and or prevent the ball from going away from him. this prevents my runner on 1st base to advance to second. what is the call.
