Union Pacific Railroad working conditions?

Not knowing exactly what the job is makes it hard to give you any kind of answer. That being said the UP pays well and offers good benefits. As for job security that's tough to answer too.We have lots of guys furloughed right now in the operating dept. But a repairman's job such as a car dept or roundhouse job is different. His best bet is to try going down to the yard and ask a few guys that work in the same dept. he's thinking of hiring into.Ask them if the work is steady and do they get cut off at all.The railroad is coldblooded when it comes to laying workers off.If things slow down they will chop jobs in a heartbeat.Being the new guy on the block means your hubby would be the first to get furloughed if it happens. Now as for working for the UP.They are a s sucking bunch of low life dogs.I worked for the Southern Pacific for over 20 years before we had the misfortune to be bought by the UP.They treated us much better than we are treated now.But they are the same as all large corporations are to work for these days so don't be scared off by my statement about them. They do pay well. And once he gets his foot in the door he can transfer to other departments if he doesn't like what he's doing. One great thing about the railroad is the fact it's always going to be there. If the railroad folds up the whole country is down the drain. He might suffer through periodic layoffs til he gets enough seniority but once he does he will have a job for life.
