How come in the 90's it was okay to like backstreet boys but now its not?

I grew up with them and other pop artist in the late 90's but never really stoped liking their music. and most people dont know that backstreet boys neverbroke up. they've been going strong for 17 years. it just seems like people used to be more open about music back then.
